演讲题目:Rhetoric as Event: From Facts of Nonusage to a Process of Becoming

演讲嘉宾:毛履鸣教授

主持人:唐青叶教授

内容简介:What is rhetoric? What do people in any given cultures do in/with rhetoric? How do they actually do it? These are some of the questions to be addressed in this talk. More specifically, Professor Mao will focus on the definition, objects of study, and methods of rhetoric in this talk. First, rhetoric is defined not so much in terms of the faculty of discovering in any particular case all of the available means of persuasion (Aristotle) as in terms of event distributed and circulated in and with time and space. Second, as event, Professor Mao sees rhetoric as engaging and embracing both “facts of usage” and “facts of nonusage” marked by how symbolic actions stand in relation to, and unfold with, one another. Third, as event, rhetoric is both generative and transformative, constituting a process of becoming with meanings emerging and circulating and solidifying between spaces of contact and conflict. Professor Mao will use some contemporary examples to illustrate these points.

毛履鸣:LuMing Mao, formerly Professor of English and Asian/Asian American Studies and Chair of the Department of English at Miami University, is now Professor and Chair of the Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies and Asian Center Faculty Affiliate at the University of Utah.
